Mastering Practices Outside of the Gym to Improve Performance Inside the Gym

Rose Fagan

We all know that being in the gym and consistently strength training is important and what needs to be done in order to build muscle and achieve goals. What is often neglected are the habits outside of the gym that are just as important as what is done inside the gym. It is crucial to make sure you are hitting all the aspects of a “healthy lifestyle” and what that looks like for you.

Besides training, here are 4 supplemental habits that should be paired with a strength program.

Nutrition - No matter your fitness goals, nutrition is one of the most important parts to aid in reaching a goal. Whether you are looking to lose weight, gain muscle, or a mix of both, using nutrition as a tool to help you is crucial.

- Think about prioritizing whole foods and protein while also balancing foods that you enjoy to make it sustainable and enjoyable long term.

Sleep- Sleep is something that has a huge impact in training and aids in overall recovery after workouts as well as preparation before a workout. It’s easier said than done but, winding down at an appropriate time and getting quality rest will lead to better performance the following day. - Try reading before bed instead of scrolling on your phone or watching TV

Hydration- In order to repair muscles, reduce soreness, improve digestion and a number of other benefits, staying hydrated should be a top priority especially to those exerting themselves multiple times a week.

- Keeping a large water bottle with you all day will make it easy and convenient to increase water intake.

Recovery - Nutrition, sleep and hydration are some of the factors that aid in exercise prep as well as recovery after a workout. If you are not recovered after one workout, the next day or next time you workout will not be as successful as it could be.

All these small steps add up overtime and will make a difference in how you feel day to day. Plan the best you can and set yourself up for success!
