What Is Step Aerobics?
Despite being around for decades, many people still aren't entirely sure what step aerobics is. Developed in the 1980s, step aerobics quickly gained popularity as a high-energy, rhythm-based cardiovascular workout. It involves performing various movements while stepping up and down on a platform, known as a "step." A standard step is 4 inches high, but you can increase the height by adding risers to adjust the intensity. While step aerobics is not a dance class, the exercises are performed to the beat of the music which helps make classes fun and motivating!
Benefits of Step Aerobics
Step aerobics offers a number of benefits and is a great way to add some fun and effective cardio into your workout routine.
Improved Cardiovascular Fitness: Step aerobics is a low impact, steady state cardiovascular exercise that can help improve your cardiovascular fitness.
Enhanced Coordination: While you don’t have to be the most coordinated person to take a step class, the choreographed movements will certainly help increase your coordination, proprioception and help fine tune your motor skills over time.
Mood Boost: Exercise in general is great for releasing endorphins but when combined with a fun, beat-driven workout, we guarantee you’ll leave class feeling happy and energized!
What to Expect in Step Class at The Training Lab
All of our step aerobics classes are currently suited for all levels, whether you’re a seasoned pro or the only steps you’ve taken have been up a flight of stairs, you’re welcome to try out our classes!
Warm Up: We begin every class with a warm up where we will go over the majority of the moves that we will use throughout the class. We repeat each move multiple times to ensure that you’re comfortable. Our warm ups are done to slower paced music, making it easy to follow along.
Choreography: After warming up, we dive into our choreographed routines. Each routine consists of 5–6 moves from the warm-up, which are repeated throughout the session. This repetition helps you master the movements and get into the rhythm.
New Moves: We take short breaks during class, and sometimes, we’ll introduce a new move to add variety to our routines.
Cool Down: We always end class with a cool down!
How to Prepare
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and clothes and bringing a water bottle with you as you will be sure to sweat!
Be Patient: Whether you’re new to step or you’ve taken class before it’s important that you are patient with yourself! Some people may be able to pick it up very quickly while it may take others a few classes to learn the moves and feel comfortable and confident stepping!
Have Fun: At the end of the day the most important thing is that you’re enjoying yourself and having fun! If you miss a step or two just try to keep moving to the music. Exercise is something that should be fun and bring you joy, not stress you out!
